Service of Thanksgiving for the birth of a child
When a precious child is born it is only natural to want to celebrate and to give thanks to God for his blessing. In church this is often done by having a baptism service. However, in some cases the parents do not feel ready to have their child baptised formally, or they want friends to sponsor and support their child but they are not baptised so cannot act as godparents.
In these cases a service of Thanksgiving may be the answer.
A service of Thanksgiving for the birth of a child is slightly less formal than a baptism, and no formal promises are made on behalf of the child. It is a chance to celebrate the birth to literally give thanks to God. This service brings together family and friends to offer their ongoing support to both child and parents.
The service can be taken by a lay minister rather than just a vicar, and it doesn’t have to be in church or on a Sunday, so there is much more flexibility over times and dates.
